Nostalgia, Music Videos and the 90's

Ah, the 90's. Everyone has their favorite decade for music and for me, there is no greater decade than the 90's. I realize there are amazing musicians that came in previous decades, and I even enjoy them, but there is just something about 90's music that seems to hold my interest the most. I am sure the main reason that is the case is the nostalgia factor that comes out of growing up with this music and constantly hearing it on the radio. Earlier in the decade, when I was still very young, I remember watching videos on MTV with my dad (back before every show on there was some reality show nonsense and they still played music videos) and waiting to hear my favorite songs come on the radio.

I still listen to many of these songs and I seem to be perpetually stuck in that time. I still listen to new artists and find new favorites, but it seems like the bulk of the music I listen to comes from the 90's. Sometimes I think I was born in the wrong decade and wish I was a teenager back then. Oh well. Below are some of my favorite songs from the 90's that define the decade for me. One Hit Wonders, A Few Hit Wonders and everything in between.

What decade of music is your favorite? What are some songs from when you were younger that you still listen to or get excited when it comes on the radio? Feel free to list them in the replies!

Better Than Ezra "Good" - I just love this song. I used to listen to it on the radio every single time it came on. Still sounds great.

Spin Doctors "Two Princes" - Another song I used to listen to constantly. I always made my mom leave it on when it came on the radio. I recently found the CD at a yard sale and still listened to it. No I am not ashamed to say I still think this song is incredible.

Sister Hazel "All For You"

Spacehog "In The Meantime"

  1. This is such a good post! I enjoy the 90s era myself and it's funny the boyfriend and i were just having this discussion the other day, there's nothing like the 90s. I've recently been enjoying some 70s music though such as Joan Jett and her bands and into her solo career, nothing gets me like Cherry Bomb from The Runaways, Joan Jett is the epitome of a badass chick.

  2. I LOVED your music selections. It's funny. I forgot Better Than Ezra sang that song. I know them better for 2005's "A Lifetime." I sing that song A LOT! And "Champagne High" is my favorite Sister Hazel song. I hate questions about preference when it comes to music because there's so much of it that I love, and after I give specifics on what I like, I always remember something I should have mentioned later.

But basically, as far as the 90's go, it's all about The Goo Goo Dolls for me. I know they had four prior studio albums before 1995's A Boy Named Goo, but whenever I here "Name" it just takes me to a place and everything in my head just stops. A few others (but certainly not all)...Pearl Jam, The Black Crowes, Third Eye Blind, Green Day, Blind Melon, Everclear, and Tonic.

  3. I STILL listen to "Two Princes" on my iPod, all the time. Quite possibly one of my favorite songs of all times. I swear the 90s definitely came out with the best music in just about all genres...Pop, Rock, Rap especially...everything was way better then.

I'm definitely with Angelia on this...I can't help but constantly go on an old school kick, especially with the Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind. So many of my friends have gone to see both of them in concert, too. I wish I could. Maybe next time they come around. You get sick of a lot of the meaningless, loud angry music these days. Something about the 90s music is a lot more...chill to me.

  4. See everyone here, being people who grew up in the 90's, has a personal favorite. I see that folks are mentioned Goo Goo Dolls especially, but for me, my 90's was three bands from this tradition. R.E.M., Oasis, and The Ska explosion. It was something I wasn't listening to before and were sounds that just captured me.

However Rich, I do feel as if many people are trying to relive instead of looking forward. It's a problem of today's world really. We are a society built on nostalgia over all other things.
